Information on Dog
& Cat Licensing in Toms
River Township.
Messages from the Toms River Township Animal Facility
- Please be aware that since
1991, Toms River Township
has required all cats be licensed, as have many other municipalities. Cats
require a current rabies shot to be licensed. New and renewed licensing
occurs in June of each year. This licensing protects you, your friends and
family, and your cat. For further information, call Joan Silvestri at
(732) 341-1000, ext. 8400 during Township business hours.
- As Spring and Summer
approach, pet owners should insure pet safety by preventing them from
running at large. It is prohibited by law to allow a dog to run
unleashed/unattended off the owner's property. This is a noticeable
problem, especially around park and beach areas. Let's strive to have a
happy and safe summer and be 'pet friendly' in Toms River
Township.
- Adopting an Animal Checklist.

For more information on a particular animal, please call the Toms River
Township Animal Facility at (732) 367-5044 between 1-4 PM every day.
- If you
should lose your pet, act quickly. Call shelters, local veterinarians and
post signs as soon as possible. You must visit the shelters in person, as
it is extremely difficult to 'describe' most animals over the phone.
Remember to license your pets and keep collar tags on them so they can be
identified when found.
If you are considering adopting an animal, think about these factors:
- Is your
home empty for more than 8 or 9 hours each day?
- Do you have
sufficient time to spend feeding, grooming, playing, and exercising a pet
every day?
- Are you
frequently away from home over night?
- Can you
afford to spend up to $1,000.00 or more each year for pet food, supplies,
and especially, mandatory and emergency veterinary visits?
- If you have
children, are they at least 4 years of age or older?
You must prepare for a safe departure
from your home for both you and your pets in the event of a weather emergency.
- Predetermine
where you and your pets can relocate; The Red Cross will not accept pets
in their Shelters.
- Contact
friends, relatives, neighbors and other pet owners who would be able to
assist you. Check out of danger area kennels and boarding facilities to
see if they would be available in an emergency.
- Be prepared
in advance to securely remove your pets from your home. Dogs need cages or
at least a strong leash and collar with identification (LICENSE) tags
attached. Cats should be in cat carriers, also wearing a collar with
license tag attached. Identification tags would be the only way to find
your pets should they become separated from you.
- Should a
hurricane warning be posted, you should have about 3 days advance to set
your plans in motion. Gather all pet food, water, bedding, medication,
health records etceteras.
- Stay
informed, listen to Radio and TV broadcasts. If an evacuation is
recommended, DO NOT WAIT too long to leave your home. You must depart
early enough to avoid flooding, fallen trees, downed power lines and heavy
traffic.
- If you are
aware of elderly neighbors, offer to help them with their evacuation plan.
